How to Determine If Your Car Has Broken Down for Good

old car

There will come a time when you need to replace your daily-driver. This is especially true when it starts to become a complete money pit. Here are some signs that your vehicle has broken down for good.

The Repair Costs More Than the Car

Even the most dependable vehicle may need an occasional repair. However, some problems are simply not worth fixing on an old car. As you start to rack up the miles on a vehicle, it’s value will slowly start to drop. Problems, like a broken timing belt, may cost more to repair than the vehicle is even worth. It’s probably a good idea to consider parting ways with your old friend.

The Motor Oil Looks Milky

Healthy motor oil should have a golden to dark brown appearance. If the motor oil looks milky, this usually spells doom for most vehicles. It’s a sign that coolant has started to mix with the oil. A blown head gasket is usually the root of the problem. Replacing the head gasket may not be worth the hassle. While the parts to do the job aren’t very expensive, labor costs can easily exceed $1,300.

Car Won’t Drive

If your vehicle won’t move when you put the gear shifter in drive, this is a definite red flag. The transmission may have finally clunked out. As you may know, replacing a transmission can be a major expense. Instead of tossing more money into a high-mileage vehicle, opt to sell it to a salvage yard. There are companies that will actually give you money for your junk car. You can then put the extra cash towards the purchase of another vehicle.

It’s Blowing Smoke

Smoke blowing from your exhaust is a very bad sign. Blue smoke is especially common, which indicates that your engine is burning oil. One or more of your oil seals has probably sprung a leak. As oil leaks into the scorching hot exhaust manifold, it will eventually start to smoke. While you can continue to drive a car with leaky seals, the smoke can become embarrassing.

Engine is Knocking

You never want to hear your engine knocking. When you start to hear a banging sound coming from the engine, it’s likely on borrowed time. While bad spark plugs can cause knocking, most car owners aren’t as fortunate and are likely experiencing a spun bearing.

It’s often hard to say goodbye to an old car. However, keeping the vehicle will hurt your finances. Getting a new ride can save you a lot of stress.
