So you’re in the market for a pre-owned car? Understanding what to keep an eye out for when purchasing a used vehicle will mean the difference between years of enjoyable drivability and spending a lot of money at the automotive repair shop.
Behind a home, a car will be one of the biggest purchases that you make in your lifetime. So it’s critical to know what it’s worth before buying, and what may be a lemon. Use this handy used car inspection checklist to ensure you’re getting the most bang for your buck.
Do Your Homework
Before you even start shopping for a used car, you need to know what type of vehicle you’re looking for. Are you seeking a safe SUV or roomy minivan to accommodate your growing family? Do you need a pickup truck with a large towing capability? Or do you want a sporty sedan to get you to your destinations in style?
Thoroughly research the type of vehicle you want to find out what common issues that model may have. This will help you map out what to look for when buying a used car.
Check Out The Exterior
Walk around the car and look for any dents, rust, dings, or scratches. Little problem areas shouldn’t be a worry, however, large areas could be an indicator of how the previous owner treated the car.
Additionally, look at the body panels and make sure they line up evenly. If they don’t, the car may have been in an accident. Open and close all of the car’s doors, its trunk and hood. Take note of how easily they open.
Also, be sure to inspect the tires. See if all of the tires are the same brand and check if each of them have enough tire tread. Ensure that there aren’t any cracks or bubbles in the tire sidewalls.
Make sure all of the exterior lights work, including the headlights, turn signals, reverse lights, and high beams.
Interior Used Car Inspection Checklist
When you inspect a used car, you should be thoroughly checking its interior too. Do a quick sniff test to see if the car smells musty or moldy. This could indicate a water leak.
Inspect all of the seats to see if there are any rips in the upholstery. Look at the dashboard indicator lights to ensure no warning lights are illuminated. Turn the car on and play with all of the control buttons and switches to see if they all work properly. Try out the AC and heater.
Lastly, check the roof headliner and trims for any signs of water damage through the sunroof, if applicable.
Under The Hood
When you buy a vehicle from a used car dealer, it is important to look under the hood. Check:
- Belts and hoses
- The radiator
- Fluids, including oil, transmission, and brake and power steering fluids
